The birdlife in Namibia and Northern Botswana is as stunning as it is diverse. From Ostriches roaming the Namib desert, to tiny Malachite Kingfishers defending their territory on the banks of the Okavango Delta, there are simply too many magnificent colours and species to do justice on a small blog.
Many people will head on safari and only focus on the big cats and large game, this would be plain wrong. Enjoying the birdlife that is so integral to this region is vital for a good trip, which is why I feature the photos more prominently. Well that, and the fact that birds make the most difficult of subjects to capture, especially in flight. So please do take a second to appreciate my picture of the Carmine Bee Eater in flight, or the Pied Kingfishers squabbling.

In the sparse, desert landscapes of Namibia, birdlife appears few and far between. Closer to Windhoek we saw many perched hawks on trees and telephone poles. Travelling across the Namib desert there was the odd ostrich, and up in Damaraland we were lucky to spot a couple of large eagles in the tree-tops. Where the birdlife really came to life was in the riverine regions in the north-east of the country. Suddenly with an abundance of water, the landscape was filled with all manner of colourful birds.
