Wildlife
Northern Botswana is famous for its exceptional wildlife, no wonder the country has positioned itself as the premier safari destination in Southern Africa. The region boasts an expansive array of diverse ecosystems which makes it a truly unmissable place to visit. This section is dedicated to our photographs of the wildlife we encountered on our trip.
Our visit centred around two key regions in Northern Botswana – Chobe National Park, and the Okavango Delta. Habitat types in these regions are diverse, from the riverside habitat at the Chobe riverfront, through to the desert landscapes of Savuti, and of course to the unique Okavango Delta region
The most popular safari area would have to be the Chobe Riverfront, an area which stretches 50km west of Kasane up the Chobe river to Ngoma bridge, the border crossing between Botswana and the Zambezi region of Namibia. Prime wildlife viewing here is down on the waterfront, where large herds of Elephants congregate to drink. When the water is low the floodplains are covered with zebra, and impala as far as the eye can see. In there river there’s a large number of Hippos and Crocodiles. It’s common for visitors to take an evening boat cruise down the river from Kasane to take in the scenery and, once back at dock, the spectacular sunset. However, as the gateway to much of the region this area does also get extremely busy,
The Okavango Delta is a vast and unparalleled landscape. Much of the region is private concessions which have strict visitor numbers, perhaps one guest per 6 or 7 square kilometres. This gives you a completely different experience to the Chobe riverfront, however you will certainly have to pay a large sum to visit some of the most exclusive regions. There are a few more accessible areas for Joe public who isn’t made of gold. Moremi National Park is a large tract of land on the Eastern side of the region, there are also affordable locations in the Khwai Community Concession to the North East, and on the Western Panhandle to the north west.
