Kingfishers

Colourful and special little birds

  1. Malachite Kingfisher
  2. Pied Kingfisher

Malachite Kingfisher

Despite the name, the Malachite Kingfisher is mostly bright blue, there are small flecks of green in its crest.

Tiny in size, the birds are aggressively territorial and respond with deep offense to any perceived threats. They are common alongside rivers across sub-Saharan Africa, but that doesn’t make them any less of a spectacular sight.

We were lucky enough to spend time watching one with our breakfast on the Khwai riverbank near Magotho. And separately near Kwara we observed the resident near the main river bridge.

Despite the name, they won’t always feed on fish, often preferring insects.

Quick through the air, the malachite is difficult to spot once it’s perched. Listen out for the incessant calls and you should be able to spot him.

Pied Kingfisher

Pied Kingfishers

Larger than the Malachite, the Pied Kingfishers we saw on the banks of the Chobe river at Muchenje Campsite were happy to hang out in a small group.
